By January 1st, 1961 many rules in Formula 1 had changed. According to the new rules, only naturally aspirated engines with a maximum displacement of 1,500 CCs were allowed to compete. These drastic rule changes put an end to the front engine F1 era, and the age to mid-mounted engines had begun.
With the new rules in mind, Ferrari developed the Dino 156 F1. What they created was a masterful workmanship with the V6 mid-engine design. One of the most remarkable highlights of this new race car was its aerodynamic aluminium body with the prominent "sharknose" front air inlets that made it unforgettable and famous all around the world.
The 1961 season became known as the great duel between two Ferrari stable mate: Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips and the American Phil Hill. Beside their incredible driving skills, both race drivers owe their successes to the predominent performances of the Dino 156. At the season's end, Phil Hill had finally become the first American Formula 1 World Champion.
